Mortal Kombat 1 Takeda Teaser Trailer, Abysmally Low Evolution 2024 Player Turnout Confirmed

On Twitter, NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon dropped the latest Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) gameplay teaser trailer for returning MKX character, Takeda Takahashi, to hype up the release of the final Kombat Pack 1 DLC fighter. As it reads in Boon's tweet, "Takeda marks the last (Kombat Pack 1) fighter, and Ferra the final (KP1) Kameo," finishing the sentence with "so far". Ed continued by saying "We look forward to supporting MK1 far beyond this... and would love to get some feedback from the community." Don't expect a long gameplay trailer, though. It's over in 19 seconds.

[UPDATE] While it's likely that Mortal Kombat 1 will continue on with future seasons, it's worth pointing out that the game appears to be struggling to hold a steady active player base... especially when compared with the stats and ongoing success of other modern fighting games in eSports in 2024 (Street Fighter 6,TEKKEN 8, and Guilty Gear -STRIVE- to name a few).

NRS's own official Mortal Kombat YouTube channel has very low viewership numbers on their competitive videos, deeply contrasting the ridiculous view counts on their reveal trailers. More shockingly, MK1's player registrants at EVO 2024 turned out abysmally low for the game's first-ever appearance at the event, with thousands fewer players than the top-played fighting games of 2024 — MK1 awkwardly thudding into the final EVO '24 leaderboard in 7th, second to last place. Even UNI2 and the 25-years-young Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike beat Mortal Kombat 1 into a bloody pulp. (All that "popularity" Ed Boon has on Twitter, and they couldn't manage to break 650 players?) MK1 still sold quite a few copies... so the game will probably be around for a while, but some might pick up a certain "tone" in Ed Boon's tweet from earlier... as (he must realize by now) a successful and long-running competitive fighting game does need an actual active "community" behind it to keep it relevant.

At the least, a Season 2 for Mortal Kombat 1 is probably imminent. NRS certainly put enough money into marketing MK1 to keep it going for a while. However, Mortal Kombat 1's "potential EVO 2025 appearance"
on the other hand is not so guaranteed. (Might be a one and done... like a typical MK1 player pulling the plug for a Quitality.) Sorry, I had to. Thank you for reading. Keep it here on The Fighters Generation for more fighting game news and upcoming EVO 2024 coverage.
