Project
L New Gameplay of Illaoi, Core Systems Demonstrated in Latest Dev
Diary Video
|
|
Tom
Cannon, executive producer for Riot Games' upcoming 2.5D fighter, Project
L, alongside game director Shaun Rivera, appears in a new dev
diary video which provides the latest
in-depth
look into
Project L's core
gameplay and tag-team
system mechanics.
Once again, Project L is an upcoming free-to-play tag team 2D
fighting game by Riot Games set in the League of Legends universe
of Runeterra. The new video also showcases the first gameplay of a new
character who was first revealed back in August,
Illaoi.
The
December 2022 dev diary video (below) provides the most comprehensive look
so far at Project L's overall gameplay mechanics, movement options,
and tag system. Game director Shaun Rivera mentions that originally, Project
L was being developed as a 1-vs-1 fighting game, but around two years
ago they decided to pivot to a 2-vs-2 tag-team fighter.

NEW
GAMEPLAY DETAILS:
Each character or "champion" will have access to two Assist
Actions. The Assist button can also be held down which makes the character
perform a "charged" Assist Action. The "Handshake
Tag" will let you immediately swap between your Point and Assist champions
as long as both are on the screen. This can be combined with the Assist
attack to create mix-ups, pressure, or to extend combos.
The "Dynamic Save" functions as a combo breaker mechanic and is
available at the start of each match. This enables the Assist champion to
appear onscreen in an attempt to save the Point champion. When successful,
the opponent will be knocked backwards. The Dynamic Save is a powerful
action but can also be countered and punished if the opponent uses it
predictably. Director Shaun Rivera also noted that the gameplay system
terms could change in the future.
Tom Cannon also mentioned that the early version of Illaoi that appears in
the video is only about 30% done, but is now in a playable state for
testing and further development.
