Main
protagonist of the DOA series, Kasumi is a female ninja of the "Mugen-Tenshin" style.
Ayane is her half-sister and cousin, Shiden and Ayame are her parents, and Raidou
is her uncle. Before entering Dead or Alive tournaments, Kasumi and Ayane - unaware that they were related - were best friends, although the clan saw Ayane as "cursed" and didn't want Kasumi or any other children to be around her. Since childhood, Kasumi has been pampered and spoiled
as she lived a privileged life full of expensive clothes, servants and the respect of the rest of the Mugen Tenshin clan. According to their mother, Ayame, Kasumi and Ayane used to have fun catching fish for the family. Her relationship with Hayate was also ideal, with the two playing games and training together happily. However, once Ayane learned of her
true heritage – a product of the rape of Ayame, making her Kasumi's half-sibling – Kasumi's friendship with Ayane ended due to Ayane's bitterness and envy over her mistreatment by the clan, centering her animosity on the "princess" Kasumi.
Kasumi was originally second-in-line for the title of clan master within the
Mugen Tenshi. In an attempt to settle her
brother
Hayate's old scores, she became
a "runaway" shinobi." Immediately after Dead or Alive World Combat
Championship,
she was taken captive by the Super-human Development Project. While held
captive,
DOATEC created two clones
of her, Kasumi Alpha and Alpha-152,
in an effort to create the perfect fighter. In DOA6, Kasumi was ambushed by
Phase 4 clones of the Alpha project, but she was saved by
Ryu Hayabusa.

Interestingly, Kasumi's debut
in DOA1 wasn't particularly exciting (or brought much "hype" to the fighting game scene).
For those who don't remember, DOA wasn't a popular game. DOA2 was much more
successful, and Kasumi's cool kata in the intro put her in the spotlight. Since DOA2,
she's become the recognizable poster girl of the series. While Kasumi has some likeable
features, I personality find her slightly boring. Kasumi's "hip thrust" fighting stance doesn't
resemble any authentic martial arts I've ever seen. Indeed, many of her moves and attacks come across
(quite heavily) as "sexualized"... Ohh, I see... that's the point? Uhh. Welcome to DOA.
Compared to other FG heroines, not much about Kasumi's look or moveset really "makes a statement".
Blue Mai Shiranui with swords? >_> She's got some
cool throw techniques, but her personality never developed much during the evolution of DOA.
As with other DOA girls, her main draw literally appears to
be her bouncy boobs & sexualized outfits. One thing I can't get past is
her 12-year-old-looking face in DOA2-DOA4. They finally fixed that problem in DOA5/DOA6. In short, I think Mai
and
Maki do it better... (and did it first). But Kasumi
isn't bad.
