Charlotte
Christine de Colde is a female Knight and artisan, head of the guard at Versailles. She started
out as a female fencer and lower class French noble. She has always disliked
the system of nobles. From a young age, she trained in the arts of Fencing
and hunting. She is a proud woman, perceived to be a bit manly from those of her home country as she talks in the same manner as a soldier. Though harsh and boastful during fights, Charlotte is a gentle and generous wanderer who truly loves her countrymen. She generally avoids womanly attire
though she will dress in it if the occasion calls for it.
When she found out that Ambrosia was the reason her country
was in turmoil, she leaves home and sets out for Japan to rid of the evil. She caught word of a "series of calamities" with no natural pretenses. During her travels,
she met with Haohmaru, Nakoruru,
Ukyo,
and Galford. After Haohmaru defeated Amakusa,
she returned back to France to take part in the French Revolution.
But one year later, she found out that Amakusa
was only a pawn for Ambrosia. She leaves France once again to fight against
Ambrosia.
In Samurai Shodown II, she finds Ambrosia to be the further source of the malice occurring around the world and journeys again to defeat the deity. At this time, she admired Haohmaru greatly but ends her affections when she sees his lover, Oshizu. She returns to Japan for similar reasons in her other appearances.
In Samurai Shodown Sen, she learns that someone powerful is supporting the royalist faction. Charlotte, a loyal member of the civil army, decides to inspect the source in Japan. After she left the care of the reformation to her comrades, she attended a bull fighting event while traveling through Europe. By this time,
one of
Golba's assassins had caught up with her, attempting to take her life. Her actions spark the interest of the torero Kirian.
Charlotte's visual design is loosely based on Oscar Francois de Jarjayes from the
manga The Rose of Versailles. Additionally, the mythology
concerning a 18th century woman disguised as a man / man disguised as a women
who is both a knight and a courtisane at Versailles is based on a real
historical figure, le Chevalier d' Eon.

As one
of the original non-samurai / ninja characters of the Samurai Shodown series, Charlotte is a unique character to the series and offers some appreciated diversity from the rest of the cast. She's a visually pleasing and intriguing design all around, and especially cool because she's a female knight - which is kind of a rare thing in games and movies,
especially in the 90's.
Both Charlotte's fighting
style and personality are nicely fleshed out in all of the Samurai Shodown games. Everything about her moveset is unique, and she's got some very original and memorable special moves / attacks. Over the years, Charlotte's design has aged well and stands the test of time, like many other characters from Samurai Shodown. Last but not least, it's
worth pointing out that unlike some other female characters in video games / fighting games, Charlotte isn't a "sexualized" design at all and doesn't show much skin (obviously, since she wears armor and is a knight). That said, I always thought she was a great character design.
