Athena Asamiya is originally
from the action arcade game Psycho Soldier (1986) and is a descendant of Princess Athena from
the game Athena (also released in 1986). Athena also starred in her own RPG called Athena:
Awakening from the Ordinary Life, which was only released in Japan on
PlayStation.
A Japanese schoolgirl, Athena Asamiya teamed up with her friend Sie
Kensou to fight in the name of justice. In Psycho Soldiers, she was
one of the "heroes of light" who defended the world from the Shiguma
forces. Her psychic powers are believed to be transmigrated to her rather than
inherited by her family.
She became a student of Kensou's Kenpo teacher, Chin Gentsai.
She has spent most of her life secluded in China's mountains training. By the
time of the KOF NESTS saga, Athena Athena became a famous pop idol in Japan.
Athena is well aware of Kensou's crush on her but usually ignores his romantic
advances since he embarrasses her.

Athena's fighting game debut was a clever way for SNK to pay homage to their classic 1986 game, Athena. Over the years, Athena has become quite the SNK pop
star. She has fans. She doesn't look much like a fighter (outside of her cool gladiatrix attire), but her magical orbs and
M. Bison psycho power BS does most of her fighting for her. (They really should've tied up their storylines in Capcom Vs. SNK). ;) I always found Athena voice to be piercingly annoying - and she can be rather annoying to fight against - especially in the early KOF games. However, her evolutions and revamped gladiatrix
version in the sequels made me appreciate her design more. Plus, she's cute.
Gotta love how Athena has a
ridiculous number of different outfits. It's a defining and innovative part of her design, actually. With each new KOF installment, it's always fun for returning fans to see Athena's brand new look. It's a close call between Athena and Yoshimitsu... who actually has the
most different costumes in a fighting game? 0.o (The contest is still going, since both characters are still going strong). If I had to pick a favorite costume of hers, I'd go with Athena's KOF2003 attire as one of her best.
