Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising

ABOUT
In January 2023, Cygames and Arc System Works announced a sequel to Granblue Fantasy Versus titled Granblue Fantasy: Versus Rising. The new title will feature enhanced visuals like character models / faces to more closely replicate the art style of Granblue Fantasy, in addition to new mechanics, new characters and stages, new story content, rollback netcode, and crossplay. The game is coming to Steam, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 with crossplay on November 30th, 2023.

The newly upgraded visuals mirror the anime and art style!

New gameplay mechanics in GBVS: Rising include New Triple Attacks and Dash Attacks. Just like the original Auto Combo system from GBVS, Triple Attacks can be performed by pushing an attack button three times in a row. The third hit, however, can now be changed to an overhead or low attack depending on the player's input. These can be used to open up a defensive foe and keep your pressure going!

Dash Attacks
are quick attacks that can be performed while a character is dashing. These can be used to close the gap and keep the pressure on the opponent with different variations using light, medium, and heavy attacks. Some characters have dash attacks that can be chained into combos or used to catch blocking foes off guard.

For when you're not fighting... Fall Guys mode.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will feature a "simplified" version of RPG mode in an all-new Story Mode, including all chapters from the first GBVS as well as an original saga. The trailer suggests that the original GBVS roster, including all previous DLC characters, will return in Rising. A new online lobby mode called "Grand Bruise Legends" featuring mini-games was also revealed.

"Grand Bruise Legends" is a new lobby mode for Granblue Fantasy: Versus Rising. The updated online lobby system allows players to take a break from fighting and take control of chibi avatars (similar to the first game, but different in more ways than one). Besides exploring the lobbies, player avatars can now compete in various mini games — some taking inspiration from the massive multiplayer battle royale obstacle course game, Fall Guys.

At the least, the new lobby system looks feature-rich and fun.

BOTTOM LINE

First Impression:

While offering stylish visuals, easy-to-get-into gameplay, and compelling characters... the original Granblue Fantasy Versus was held back by subpar netcode. In traditional fighting game fashion, Cygames and Arc System Works is looking to revive the series with the GBVS: Rising enhancement, fixing the netcode issue with rollback and adding plenty of new content.

As a casual fan of the Granblue series, I'm looking forward to seeing which new characters make the cut in the sequel. I also still have my fingers crossed for guest characters in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, which I think would add a lot of excitement to the title.
