SNK and
Plaion Announce the NeoGeo AES+
|
|
|
|
SNK
and Plaion have officially announced the return of the legendary NEOGEO
Advanced Entertainment System, reimagined for the modern era as the NEOGEO
AES+. Celebrating 35 years of arcade perfection, the original hardware
was renowned for its 24-bit luxury architecture, which provided a 1:1
direct replica of the MVS arcade boards, famously birthing the
"100Mega Shock" moniker for games that exceeded 100 Mb in size.
While the original system was often considered a status symbol for gaming
connoisseurs due to its premium pricing and high-end performance, this new
iteration aims to bridge the gap between retro authenticity and
contemporary convenience.
The NEOGEO AES+ is
engineered to maintain the aesthetic and functional integrity of the
original console while integrating modern quality-of-life enhancements.
Key features of the new system include native HDMI output for
high-definition displays, integrated DIP switches for arcade-style
configuration, and overclocking capabilities to ensure smooth performance.
|
Priced at $249.99 (£179.99/€199.99), the console is positioned as a
premium yet accessible entry point for enthusiasts who have long desired a
modern way to experience the SNK library without the degradation
associated with aging hardware. The historical significance of the NEOGEO,
often documented in literature regarding the evolution of home consoles,
highlights its unique position as a bridge between the arcade and the
living room, a legacy that the AES+ intends to preserve.
|
The Neo Geo AES+ is slated
to launch with several highly anticipated game bundles, featuring
remastered versions of classic SNK hits alongside potential support for
original MVS cartridges. The console will be available in multiple
editions, ranging from a standard "Collector’s Edition" to a
premium "Gold Metal" variant, with pricing tiers expected to
reflect the high-end build quality, typically ranging from $399 to $599
depending on the included software and peripheral accessories. As the
community continues to support the platform through homebrew development
and official re-releases, the AES+ stands as a testament to the timeless
appeal of SNK's arcade philosophy.
|
Pre-orders
for the console are now live, with the launch date scheduled for November
12th, 2026. This release arrives at a time when the retro gaming
market is experiencing a significant surge in interest, with various
manufacturers attempting to replicate the success of classic hardware
through modern remakes. By combining the raw power of the original 24-bit
architecture with modern display standards, the AES+ is poised to satisfy
both long-time collectors and a new generation of players interested in
the history of high-end gaming technology.
As the industry continues to look backward to move forward, the return of
the NEOGEO AES+ stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of
arcade-perfect gaming experiences.
You can pre-order the system or learn more about the various editions of
the NeoGeo AES+ and arcade sticks on the official
