Capcom Says PC will be "Main Platform" Going Forward
|
|
Over the past several years, numerous fighting game franchises have made the transition from being primarily played
on consoles to launching on PC / Steam as the "standard". Modern mainstream fighting games such as Street Fighter V,
TEKKEN 7,
Mortal Kombat 11,
SoulCalibur 6, and
Guilty Gear -STRIVE- all have had strong launches on PC, with highly-rated Steam versions featuring the best-quality graphics & netcode, lowest latency during gameplay, and user-created mods enhancing the experience and replayability for years. In a recent interview with the Tokyo-based newspaper Nikkei, Capcom's chief operating officer
Haruhiro Tsujimoto recently said PC will be the company's "main platform" in the future.
"We will expand our business for dedicated game consoles, which has been the mainstream up to now, but PC will be the mainstream in the future," he said. "In 2022 or 2023, we want to equalize the ratio of sales to PCs and dedicated consoles."
Capcom noted digital game sales on PC and recent gaming trends in Japan have lead to the decision to pivot towards making PC gaming its focus.
"PC is driving global sales," said Tsujimoto. "We have recently stated that we will make the PC our main platform."
"The pandemic is changing the way people look at PCs," he said. "Smartphones are convenient, but their screens are small, and their touch panels are difficult to operate, so they are not suitable for home working or school classes. I think PCs will be the next big thing after smartphones."
"The PC can also play high-quality games, so the number of PC users should increase as understanding of the PC increases," said Tsujimoto.
While on the topic, Capcom recently mentioned Resident Evil Village set a franchise record for concurrent players on Steam, and Monster Hunter World on PC was the second largest audience across all platforms.
While Capcom will still (obviously) release their latest titles on major gaming systems like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, it will be interesting to see how "PC-focused" fighting game releases will evolve the genre and community going forward.
