The
mysterious Aval Organization was a secret group with origins rooted in ancient
times. They say the group came to be when a king used the spirit sword to
defeat its cursed counterpart, and with his dying breath, entrusted them with
both the blade and his unfinished mission. Each new generation has taken on
the group’s mission to rid the world of “Outsider” — those connected
with the cursed sword. One such member was Grøh, about whom little is known
save for that he was a fearsome warrior. Though his fighting style is shrouded
in mystery, he is believed to have wielded two swords. Some also say he kept a
certain technique close to his chest…
Grøh
utilizes the Aval Twinblade Swordsmanship that often employs multiple
consecutive slashes. This has a major disadvantage in that a careless
practitioner runs the risk of injuring themselves. As such, it takes a lot of
practice to use this style effectively. Dual-swordsmanship also allows for the
swords to be split in two and wielded separately. This tactic is one of the
many ways a wielder can use to surprise their opponent, giving them the
opportunity to string together a series of blows that lead to a final, deadly
slash.

Visually, I liked Groh at first glance. His stature and stance reminded me a bit of
ZWEI from SC5 - who I was a big fan of (my #1 main, actually). Groh's got some cool mannerisms, intro & win animations, along with some undeniably "cool guy" moves that suit his appearance. However, he's not as dynamic of a character as I'd hoped for... as some of his best moves / abilities kinda
promote spamming - which, in this case, actually can be effective in the hands of a good player. Groh's also got his cheap teleporting stuff once his Soul Charge is activated. I'm not usually a fan of teleporting characters in fighting games - least of all Soul Calibur.
In fairness, some of his powerful moves / teleport moves are "cool"... but I think he still falls short on style points compared to some other Soul Calibur characters from the past. For a "fantasy-realm" character, ZWEI had a more interesting concept and playstyle, if you ask me. I would've rather seen ZWEI appear in SC6
more fleshed out, over Groh. Even so, Groh seems like a character that might help get new players into the series (especially since he's pretty easy to use).
