Though he looks like him, Rasetsumaru is not Haohmaru or related to him in any way. In reality, he is a bloodthirsty demon from the dark world of Makai, opened up by Amakusa many years earlier. He learns about the existence of Haohmaru, a so-called skilled warrior who looks like him. Calling him a "copycat", Rasetsumaru now searches for Haohmaru to kill him.

Ohh SNK, why'd you have to go and give Haohmaru the Evil Ryu treatment? *sigh* I guess it was inevitable... Samurai Shodown 5? Yeah, sounds about the right time for an "evil" version of the main protagonist....  -__-

I have mixed feelings about this design. While the concept of a "what if?" evil Haohmaru seems halfway interesting, as the designers made Rasetsumaru a "completely different" character who actually thinks Haohmaru is the "copycat". Yeah... shit just got weird. It's kind of an interesting concept for a fighting game character, but that doesn't change the fact that Rasetsumaru is a cheap sprite clone of SS3 Haohmaru. Yeah, he has a few new animations... but some of them look very rushed and "cheap" (like other clone designs in SSV). If SNK gave Rasetsumaru a completely different fighting style (and fleshed him out in other ways), Rasetsumaru might be a more interesting design. Nonetheless, I will say that most of Rasetsumaru's official character artwork looks pretty damn awesome. I'll give them that.
