Blue Mary, whose real name is Mary Ryan, debuted as a private detective in Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory. Mary grew up in a police family, and soon joined the police herself. She fell in love with a man named Butch, who worked with her father in the secret service. Butch also taught Mary a lot about Commando Sambo (her fighting style). While on a mission protecting the president, Butch and her father were both shot and killed by terrorists. The leather jacket she wears is a keepsake given to her as a gift from Butch. Mary also has a dog named Anton.

In the King of Fighters series, a mysterious benefactor requested Mary's services to enter the tournament, along with Billy Kane and Yamazaki. During the outcome of the tournament, it was discovered that Yamazaki had become more and more insane due to the Orochi blood coursing through his veins and that Billy was sent by Geese to keep an eye on him in order to learn the secret of the Orochi power. However, during a moment of confusion, Yamazaki escaped and Mary was left to ponder on Geese's motives and the root of the situation.

Following its conclusion, Terry Bogard informs her of the NESTS cartel and their actions occurring in Southtown. With a new goal in mind to stop the organization, Mary joins the Women's Team along with King, Kasumi Todoh, and Xiangfei, and the "Lonely Wolves" in 2000 and 2001 to assist in stopping NESTS in the following tournaments, eventually leading to its demise. Around this time, it is rumored that she fell in love with Terry. It is unknown whether she finally hooked up with Terry or not.

In 2003, she joins the tournament to investigate the movements of Those From the Past and teams up with former teammate King, as well as another Fatal Fury Team alumna Mai Shiranui. In KOF XI, Mary teamed up with Vanessa and Ramon to continue her case.

Blue Mary debuted a bit late in the Fatal Fury series, but it seems like she's been around for longer. Her design gained some steam in Real Bout and KOF. Mary's visual design is a bit "plain jane". I think her Real Bout outfit (with jacket) more aesthetic than her KOF attire. Her Commando Sambo-based fighting style is a bit random for the way she looks, yet unique... but isn't what I'd call incredible. To her credit, she does have some cool throws & grapples, which SNK cleverly implemented with unique 2D sprite animations.

I find it funny how some artists have drawn Blue Mary with a HUGE belt (in an effort to make her more visually compelling). For some reason, I kinda like her oversized belt... as her double belt look is one of the most memorable aspects of her outfit. (Might as well exaggerate it!) lol. There's something about Mary that makes her a cool SNK design, but she really hasn't evolved as much as she could've over the years. Her later 3D appearances in KOF: Maximum Impact, KOF14, and KOF15 were cool to see. She actually looks pretty good in 3D!
