The Orochi is an ancient spirit which once was defeated by the Yasakani and Kusanagi families and sealed by the Yata. However, it struck a deal with the Yasakani, granting them its power and weakening the seal. Orochi later ordered eight warriors, the Hakkeshu, to prepare for its arrival. Goenitz eventually broke the seal by killing the heir of the Yata. After his death, the New Faces Team tried to reawaken Orochi. They succeeded by sacrificing themselves, and Orochi then took over Chris' body.

Orochi's character origin is another interpretation of the mythical eight headed serpent, Yamata no Orochi. In the KOF series, he is a chthonic supernatural being that regards itself as executing the will of Gaea. He does not regard humanity as trustworthy with regard to coexisting with the planet without ravaging it and so seeks to extinguish it. He was sealed 1,800 years ago by the three sacred treasures of Japan. The three clans' descendants are charged with protecting the seal over it.

In KOF '97, his spirit possesses Chris
(A herald of Orochi) to fight in the mortal realm. He is sealed again at the end of the '97 tournament by the three descendants of the users of the three sacred treasures, but the seal surrounding is broken in recent games by the demon Mukai. A clone of Orochi appears as a boss in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum named Mizuchi.

Orochi is easily one of the most powerful SNK bosses ever created... it's interesting to see their take on an all-powerful (Dragonball Z level) design, but at the same time, Orochi might be a bit too powerful for the series. As a super cheap-ass boss, I guess he originally got the job done to steal quarters from arcade-goers... alas, he's an easy design to hate. lol. However, from a design standpoint, Orochi doesn't strike me as an exceptionally exciting design either. White pants and a cool chest tattoo? I dunno... seems like his design could use something more. I never had much love for god-like characters who don't think they need to "try" very hard to destroy their opponents.

In closing, I'm glad Orochi was only featured in the early "saga" of the KOF series. It seems SNK realized they have much better character designs to focus on in the later of the series. Thankfully, Orochi was never one of those must-have characters in the KOF franchise... that would've gotten very annoying, fast.
