The first screenshots of the new 2021 Mortal Kombat movie surfaced online today. The film's director Simon McQuoid confirmed on Entertainment Weekly that the new MK film will
indeed have
"blood, gore, and fatalities." Regarding the film's rating, McQuoid said "The rules around ratings aren't what a lot of people think they are. It's amount of blood, amount of red, it's interpretation of how you go about it. We had a lot of discussions about getting the balance right." Actor Lewis Tan (Wu Assassins, Into the
Badlands) plays Cole Young in the movie, a new character to the franchise. Cole is described as a washed-up MMA fighter whose career has gone down the drain. Tan told EW, "I've been playing the game since I was a kid. For lack of a better way to describe it, you don't want to mess it up because it's so iconic."
Below, take a look at the first screenshots of the upcoming film, set to release in theaters / HBO Max on April 16th, 2021. [UPDATE] The
official trailer released on Feb. 18th, 2021.
Regarding Fatalities, Tan confirms, "There are some crazy Fatalities. We've picked a couple of iconic ones. There's a lot of really cool signature moves that you'll see, a lot of Easter Eggs that we snuck into the film, but there are some really badass Fatalities that I can't wait to see on the
big screen." Tan continued, "They're brutal, man. They don't hold back."

Actor Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, The Twilight Samurai) plays Hanzo Hasashi AKA Scorpion in the film."We did a bit of research and the kunai is actually an ancient Japanese gardening tool," the director explained. "So, one of the earliest shots in the movie is the
kunai blade being used as a gardening tool by Hanzo's wife."

The movie begins with a crucial piece of lore from the original games: the blood feud between the clans of Scorpion and Sub-Zero. The 10-minute opening sequence is set in feudal Japan, long Scorpion and Sub-Zero wielded their supernatural powers.
