A Shaolin monk, Kai is a descendant of the family that originally founded the secretive White Lotus Society. Kai is a former member of this society, as are Liu Kang and Kung Lao. He met Liu Kang who happened to be in America at the time, recruiting to train a new generation of Shaolin warriors. During the events of Mortal Kombat 4, Liu Kang and Kai join the Earth warriors in Edenia to assist Raiden in his battle against Shinnok. After Shinnok was beaten, Kai decided to wander the Earth on a quest for self-enlightenment.

A black Shaolin monk? Cool. I thought Kai was a halfway decent design in MK4. He debuted with a simple, cool appearance for a Shaolin warrior and had some fairly interesting special moves. His original look wasn't terrible... but for some reason, the ever-brilliant Midway decided to completely change his design in MK: Armageddon... and wow did they mess up his design.

Kai's Armageddon design is atrocious, like many returning characters in that game. When bringing back a classic character from a franchise after so many years, it's wise to keep the integrity of the character somewhat intact. The devs didn't use common sense and completely changed his design beyond the point of recognition. Poor Kai didn't age well and even has an entirely different facial structure from his first appearance, not to mention a bad haircut and terrible-looking bulky armor that would look better suited in a generic FPS. Kai went from Shaolin Monk to level 1 Quake grunt. That bulky melon-colored armor is just... wow. Good going Midway, way to ruin a design. Just one of the reasons MK: Armageddon was a disgrace and the worst MK game I ever played.
