Hayate is a Japanese swordsman from Kukunochi village who is the son of a legendary hero who saved his village by vanquishing a giant storm named Orochi. He is one of the only characters in the Street Fighter series to use a sword, utilizing a unique fighting style. In the Street Fighter EX 2 PLUS Hong Kong comic, Hayate is based on Garuda before he wore the cursed mask (but this is not considered / confirmed canon). A new version of Hayate appears in Fighting EX Layer (2018).

Hayate appears in the original Street Fighter EX2, but does not appear in the arcade version of Street Fighter EX2 Plus. However, he does appear in the PlayStation version as a secret secret character.

Hayate is the first character in Street Fighter to use a katana (besides Sodom, but he actually uses tantos I believe). To clarify, Hayate is the first Street Fighter character to fight with a two-handed sword. When I first saw his character artwork in SFEX2, I thought he looked awesome (love that pose). Then, I learned Hayate was a secret character. Hype increased. Long story short, Hayate was a great addition to SFEX2's roster and a surprisingly interesting new type of character that the series hadn't seen before.

Hayate is definitely one of the most mysterious and "least known" Street Fighter characters out there... appearing as a secret character in only 1 game. (I think that's some sort of record.) I was definitely disappointed that Hayate didn't return in SFEX3 (another disappointing aspect of that game). Hayate was a fun-to-use character in SFEX2 and has a really cool, traditional samurai look... while still appearing "modern" in some way. I was also hoping Hayate would return in Fighting EX Layer... and he sort of did... but as a different character named Hayate. For the record, I think this version of Hayate is better.
