Geralt of Rivia is the main protagonist of The Witcher series, a series of role-playing games made by Polish developer CD Projekt Red which is based on the well-known collection of books and short stories by author Andrzej Sapkowski. Like all witchers, Geralt is a professional monster hunter for hire. Like most witchers, Geralt is especially gifted in swordplay. By way of special training passed down through the ages and violent genetic body mutations undertaken at a young age, Witcher's develop special abilities to aid in their pursuit. Geralt also has a deep knowledge of alchemy, being able to brew a wide variety of potions for his battles and contracts. Geralt is also well read, and has an above-average understanding of the arts, religions (although he is an atheist), and sciences of Temeria.

During the Trial of the Grasses, Geralt exhibited unusual tolerance for the mutagens that grant witchers their abilities. Accordingly, Geralt was subjected to further experimental mutagens which rendered his hair white and may have given him greater speed, strength, and stamina than his fellow witchers. Geralt is also known as Gwynbleidd, meaning "White Wolf" in Elder Speech. He was given this alias by the dryads, and is also called the Butcher of Blaviken after an unfortunate incident in that town.

Despite his title, Geralt does not hail from the city of Rivia. After being left with the witchers by his mother, Visenna, he grew up in their keep of Kaer Morhen in the realm of Kaedwen. In the interest of appearing more trustworthy to potential clients, young witchers were encouraged to make up surnames for themselves by master Vesemir. As his first choice, Geralt chose "Geralt Roger Eric du Haute-Bellegarde", but this choice was dismissed by Vesemir as silly and pretentious, so "Geralt" was all that remained of his chosen name. "Of Rivia" was a more practical alternative and Geralt even went so far as to adopt a Rivian accent to appear more authentic. Later, Queen Meve of Lyria knighted him for his valour in the Battle for the Bridge on the Yaruga conferring on him the formal title "of Rivia", which amused him. He, therefore, became a true knight of Lyria, only to lose the title soon after for departing.

Geralt of Rivia is portrayed as a taciturn, cunning, and mercenary protagonist. He rarely partakes in the joys of friendship and human company (save his closest friends like Dandelion), although he has been known to enjoy women (such as Yennefer, his love) or a good tankard now and then. He does few favors and travels throughout Temeria in search of coin. He does exhibit signs of basic humanity, as he constantly seeks to choose 'the lesser evil' in the moral quagmires he faces throughout the novels. He can also be considered somewhat of a pacifist, as he usually chooses the path of least resistance or violence, even if it means endangering his life and limb. He is not, however, opposed to choosing inaction, even if this will cause others to suffer or die.

The Witcher 3 was my first Witcher game... I put a solid 40 hours into that game and still haven't beat it. lol. What a great game though. Geralt is a likeable fella. His personality in The Witcher game grows on you. He's generally witty, and doesn't put up with too much shit from people. I can respect a guy like that. In some ways, his personality reminds me of Wolverine. He can take it to the bad guys... like a bad guy. The hair? The armor? The fighting abilities? Geralt is a badass.

Geralt made an excellent guest character in Soul Calibur VI for obvious reasons. He fits right in. Bandai Namco nailed his moveset and animations... it's like he stepped right out of The Witcher 3 and into Soul Calibur flawlessly.
